Sylvain Connac

Teacher-researcher (LIRDEF), Pedagogue

Senior lecturer at Paul Valéry University, Montpellier

Sylvain Connac is a school teacher by training. After gaining experience in popular education, he taught for several years in a public school with a specific project, based on multi-age teaching, in the priority education sector. The principle was to accommodate a group of 25 children aged between 5 and 12 in each class, to help teachers take account of this great heterogeneity and develop appropriate teaching methods, fostering autonomy, responsibility and cooperation among pupils. In short, the aim was to create an educational space as rich as the single classrooms in rural areas, but without having to deal with isolation and loneliness.

It was in this context that, in 2004, together with Michel Tozzi, he submitted a doctoral thesis in educational science on democratic and philosophical discussions in cooperative classes and priority education.

In 2010, he became head of training for kindergarten to high school teachers at ISFEC Montpellier. The aim was to support teams in taking positive account of student diversity, so that these establishments under contract with the State are able to welcome and help all categories of children and young people to progress.

Since 2014, Sylvain Connac has been a teacher-researcher in Education Sciences at Montpellier's Paul Valéry University. He is part of the LIRDEF laboratory (EA 3749) and develops pedagogical research around the ordinary consideration of heterogeneity, i.e. without sidelining students recognized as different because of their academic performance. He teaches mainly to students in the E-education Sciences degree program at the UPV, who are admitted in the first year because they are intending to work in education or teaching.

He is the author of a number of pedagogical works, including Apprendre avec les pédagogies coopératives and La personnalisation des apprentissages. (ESF Editeur)
