Fabien Truong is a sociologist, associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Paris 8 University, and head of the MEEF SES master's program preparing students for the SES Capes exam. Between 2005 and 2010, he was a social sciences teacher for six years in several high schools in Seine-Saint-Denis.
Before his academic and research career, he had a career in music, recording several albums and performing numerous concerts.
His work focuses on the intersections between urban marginality, education, social mobility, youth, working-class communities, and the relationships between race and class. He is also interested in the relationship between cinema and sociology and is currently co-directing a long-term documentary. He co-edits the collection L'envers des faits at La Découverte. In 2013, he published Des capuches et des hommes. Trajectoires de « jeunes de banlieue » (Buchet-Chastel), and more recently, Jeunesses françaises. Bac+5 made in banlieue (La Découverte), a study on the educational trajectories of "young suburbanites" – from obtaining their high school diploma to entering the workforce.
